Mikio Kobayashi

Classical-Modern Japan Karate-do Jyoshinmon has founded in 1969 by a grandmaster IKEDA Hoshu.
So called, ‘Jyoshinmon Shorin-ryu’ transmits a legitimacy of the Shorin-ryu perfected by master KYAN Chotoku,
one of the sage of Karate in 1940s in Okinawa, being founded by the grandmaster IKEDA Hoshu with a new technical system.
The grandmaster IKEDA Hoshu had studied Japanese ancient martial arts, various styles of Karate, Chinese martial arts, and body works based on the Oriental medicine; has created a new general principle of the Jyoshinmon karate-do. Therefore, considering on the distinctiveness of the new technical system from other societies of the Shorin-ryu, the grandmaster IKEDA Hoshu named it as the ‘Jyoshinmon Karate-do’. The international society of the Jyoshinmon karate-do is called as the ‘International Jyoshinmon Shorin-ryu Karate-do Federation’ (IJSKF).
In 1975, six years after the foundation, the grand master IKEDA Hoshu published a book entitled “Perspectives of the Classical-Modern Aspect of Karate-do” Vol.1. In the preface of the book, the grand master IKEDA Hoshu wrote that “In those days, only scarce people pursuit of the real culture of Karate-do; practicing extensively and intensively is our standpoint and perspective, while we would reject extensively and shallow”.
There is no value in searching seriously of any philosophies for superficial martial arts.
Extensiveness means popular in practicing martial arts, which has the wide range of responsibility for the various needs of every members with age, sexuality, and occupations.
Fortunately, our Jyoshinmon karate-do has worthy characteristics with availability for these various motivations, which is the very best wishing to construct in all our karate-do life.
Everybody ages and dies inevitably. Majority of karate players in the world have been high-lighted on many games when they are young. Nevertheless, once they have aged, they would stop training and abandon their karate in their life anymore. However, the Jyoshinmon karate-do has a distinct way.
The Jyoshinmon karate-do has been compiled with the Budo philosophy, or the martial arts philosophy of ‘Shin’, ‘Gyo’, and ‘So’, which signifies practicing or performing like as the block style in writing, as the cursive style, and as the flowing style, respectively. These styles shall lead you from the beginner’s classes, to the higher Dan with sophisticated and advanced techniques, and enter into the secret principles with ages.
In other words, the Jyoshinmon karate-do synthesizes each contrastive element such that martial arts vs. games, health management vs. sports training into one practicing way.
Therefore, the Jyoshinmon karate-do provides you the wide range of body works from the archaic martial arts based on the Bo, or the cudgel play to the health works based on the Oriental medicine.
Thus, the prefix, ‘Classical-Modern’ means that the Jyosshinmon karate-do has the mission in unifying two distinct side views of the Japan Karate-do; to transmit the legitimacy of traditional karate evolved in Okinawa in one hand, to reform the karate-do in accordance with the evolution of the modern human activity in another hand.
We wish each of you to enjoy the fruitful life in participating our Jyoshinmon karate-do!
